    Updated my portfolio page to include a timeline of my growth and evolution as a full stack web developer. Excited to add new landmarks to this list in 2020!

    One more function factory for fun. This one is designed to produce functions that test whether or not a number is between the range specified as an input. And yes, the logic used for the temperature of lava is scientifically accurate. 👨‍💻

    Hard work is the engine. Strategy is the GPS. It’s difficult to get anywhere without hard work. If the engine stops running, progress stalls. But you’ll waste a lot of gas without a good strategy. It’s easier to make progress when you’re following the optimal path.

    (Not a football guy, hence the code tweets -- last one!) So the only time you'll see a return within a return is when you use a function factory. Function factory = quick and easy way to produce similar logic with slight variations. 👨‍💻

    This is a goofy example but also a good illustration of how and why you might want to pass one function into another function as an argument (i.e. if you want to do x-action a different amount of times depending on y-situation). 👨‍💻

    Here's a function unlike anything I've ever tried before. allTheMaths contains an arrow function for add, subtract, multiply, and divide. The results object holds a call to each function and whatever number the equation produced. Whoa! 👨‍💻

    Also: here's a cleaner + more concise way to do the exact same thing -- draw a random playing card -- with an assist from a helper function (appropriately labeled "dealer"). ♣️♥️♠️♦️ 👨‍💻

    Here's a fun program that mimics drawing a random card from a deck. Card and suit indexes generate a number based on how many options are available. Then I used [square] brackets to access the value, convert to an object, and return. 👨‍💻

    Be careful with the placement of your return statements, especially when you're running a loop that checks several values inside an array for a certain conditional. Returning too soon will end the thread of execution before it's done. 👨‍💻

    Friendly reminder: you can loop through objects just like arrays as long as you throw on some extra weird syntax: Object.keys(variableName). I'd forgotten, sharing just in case anybody else did too. Amazing how much stuff a loop can do. 👨‍💻

    Here's a helpful hint from the Javascript course I'm taking as a refresher (wish I knew it sooner). When nesting for loops, label and indent the console statement of your inner loop for a better visualization of what's really happening. 👨‍💻

    Today I reviewed: arrays, objects, nesting arrays/objects, array/string methods, ternary operators, switch statements, template literals, conditionals, for loops + a long list of their use cases. 300 lines deep in my follow along code! 👨‍💻

    Certain code concepts seemed baffling when I was first exposed to them. On the second pass, they're making a lot more sense ("slice" and "splice" = obvious examples). Hope this trend continues throughout the other five courses I bought. 👨‍💻

    Doing an extensive review of Javascript fundamentals. Hoping this will plug in little syntax-related knowledge gaps as this is often where I get stuck on algorithmic problems. Here are some string methods I've played with so far today. 👨‍💻

    I just did a ton of React code for the first time in a while. It used to seem so complex. But after stretching my brain with algorithms, it seems way easier. Perhaps refreshing my memory RE: React won't be as hard as I thought! 👨‍💻

    Harsh truth: if you want to achieve anything in life, you often have to do stuff you don't *really* enjoy. Enjoyment follows confidence. Confidence follows competence. You can't have #1 without #2 + #3. And that takes time.

    Python doesn't make for interesting tweets. I miss having videos of cool responsive designs to show y'all... can only share so many code screenshots while babbling about the importance of writing good comments before it gets old. 👨‍💻

    Seneca was always prepared for disruption and always working that disruption into his plans. He was fitted for defeat or victory. The Stoics call that premeditatio malorum: imagining all that can go wrong. A useful practice for anticipating obstacles and managing expectations.

    In this section, we’ll take a look at various common scenarios that arise and how to solve them with Python code. Specifically, I’ll share a brief explanation of the problem with a list of Python code solutions. { author: }

    Work or study in an environment where stuff is planned *months* in advance? If so, you should look for key dates on the calendar and brace yourself for incoming challenges. It's always better to be over-prepared than under-prepared.
