@WebStormIDE Is there a way to tell webstorm a file is of a certain type when it doesn't have an extension? for example a yaml file which doesn't have a .yml or .yaml extension. I want the syntax highlighting

Yes, you can associate it with a specific file type when creating a new file/by right-clicking the desired file in the Project view & selecting Associate with File Type (see http://jetbrains.com/help/webstorm/creating-and-registering-file-types.html#register-new-association …). You can also manage file types in Preferences/Settings | Editor | File Types.
