the ecma version changing is unrelated as you mentioned; i brought it up to imply something under the hood changed... re-setting apps to ecma 6 is a small annoyance

Sorry, but we can't reproduce this problem when creating a new project in WebStorm 2019.1.1.

it’s projects created in older versions that are then opened with latest stable … git doesn’t show any changes in .idea but the app is back to ecma 5.1; i get the feeling you had multiple clobbering merges regressing fixes

‘cause this used to be an issue and then didn’t seem to happen for the 2018 releases from what i recall

For the existing projects with the language version set to ES5.1, WebStorm does not change it to ES6 - that's the designed behavior and it hasn't changed in 2018.x or 2019.x. You need to update the language version manually or remove the .idea folder and reopen the project as new

You got the situation backwards, es6 project opening and resetting to default which is 5.1

Sorry, we can't reproduce that using WebStorm 2017.2 and 2019.1.1. Do you know the exact IDE version you've used when creating a project?

If ES5.1 was used, the information about the language version is not referenced in the config files in .idea. If the version was changed, then it's stored in the misc.xml file.

i meant the ide version; i’ve been using the same machine for about 2yr now with only updates to webstorm in that time; the project folders span 2yr in this case
