Can you please enable coding assistance for Node.js by pressing Alt-Enter on 'ulr' or 'path': that way the imported symbols will be properly resolved and the correct usages will be found.
For the existing projects with the language version set to ES5.1, WebStorm does not change it to ES6 - that's the designed behavior and it hasn't changed in 2018.x or 2019.x. You need to update the language version manually or remove the .idea folder and reopen the project as new

You got the situation backwards, es6 project opening and resetting to default which is 5.1

Sorry, we can't reproduce that using WebStorm 2017.2 and 2019.1.1. Do you know the exact IDE version you've used when creating a project?
