I think the option that makes most sense is functional component by default, with the “class” option being React.Component.

Yeah, I would recommend to use functional components by default, second option for class based without PureComponent. PureComponent is an optimization, not something one should do by default. An optimization that requires benchmarking.

Uhm I don't wanna rain on your parade but I think it shouldn't default to functional, at "worst" to a standard component. cc
