This is purportedly a photo from 10 minutes ago at 9:30am local time in #Paradise, CA. Gridlocked traffic in evacuation zone amid total blackout conditions under #CampFire smoke plume. Wow. #CAwx #CAfirehttps://twitter.com/glenncanon/status/1060587358632914944 …

Here's hoping that the campfire builder spends the rest of his/her life in prison! NOBODY with any sense builds or doesn't snuff out a fire in drought -riddled California! My home state is being completely decimated.

While the name of the fire per fire officials is "Camp Fire," that doesn't mean it was started by an actual campfire. Wildfires are usually named after landmark near source of origin.

Aren't most of these fires started by lightning? I grew up in the Los Angeles foothills and fires were fairly common. I recall driving on roads where the fires were burning on the sides of the roads. The word "Campfire" sounds human starter. Thank you for the information!

Some, but relatively few California wildfires are started by lightning--most are (accidentally) human-caused. This one certainly wasn't started by lightning, as there has been no lightning in the area for many weeks. Determining initial cause usually takes a while.

Cause determined at onset, hence its name. Camp fire got out of control.

It was named for its origin at camp creek road: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2018_Camp_Fire …

Now it's threatening my family and friends still living in CA. Living in Westlake Village for six years and going to school in Thousand Oaks was a shocker too. I'm not on Facebook, but get reports from Dad. So far, so good.
