Incredible #GOES16 satellite imagery of extremely dangerous, fast-moving wildfire in wildland-urban interface currently burning through #Paradise, California at an estimated 80 acres *per minute.* Strong, dry east winds. Really bad feeling about this one. #CampFire #CAwx #CAfirepic.twitter.com/l1667JOmDc

Hey Daniel -- how do you get 80 per minute? Is there a sat algorithm for this?

That was based on (crude) early estimates of size based on reports from others using satellite, on-the-ground estimates. There was a recent mention by a CALFIRE PIO that the total acreage was 17,000+ acres ~6 hours after it started (which is sustained rate of ~50 acres/minute).

So I wouldn't take that initial estimate too literally, although (amazingly) it does seem to be in the ballpark. This is an extremely fast-moving fire.

Yeah I saw that estimate from Cal Fire and 80 acres/min is reasonable for a moment at least... 7-8 square miles per hour.

We live in the North Bay, roughly 100 miles south of the Camp Fire. It's very windy here too, the sky is extremely hazy, and it's so smoky that I thought it was from a nearby grass fire. Based on what we're seeing this far away, 80 acres/min doesn't seem surprising at all.

80 acres per MINUTE? How many miles per hour is THAT? Sounds insane.

60 acre sections are 2000' x 1000' so 1.333 times that. Depending on the width, it might only be 100 feet per minute... Or ~1mph. Which is still crazy fast.

Didn't know doves were so good at arithmetic. Rats are utter failures at anything beyond simple math. But we can chew wood like a pro. PS. Doves are challenged at aviation, especially landings.

I live in the forest among the trees. It's good to know how to fly when necessary and what velocity will get you out of harm's way. Typically faster than a swallow can fly.

Yes, but what is the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow?

The smoke has now swept into the Bay Area. We’ve lost sight of the far side of the bay and it smells like a camp fire. Good name for it.
