Then they promote it like they are doing some great good. On a scale poor people are far more charitable than the wealthy people/corporations at the other end of the scale.

I cannot stand when companies like McDonalds asks you to donate a dollar to some charity. They collect that dollar and then write it off as their charitable contribution. It costs them nothing and they actually gain from it financially.
