Great White Egret winter numbers started picking up around 2009 and have really started increasing in the past couple of years.

The worldwide rise of the Cattle Egret is just getting started in the UK - it won't be long before we can produce a WeBS index for them as their numbers and distribution increase

Little Egret is our most common egret in winter, peaking at an estimated 11,000 birds in September with young and continental birds joining the breeding pairs.

2/2 The LBB Gulls on the other hand have seen an increase in numbers at Hayle. The highest tally for this Low Tide survey for me is 420 on 05/02/2011, highest altogether is 550 in 1999. 420 was also my highest total so it came as a nice surprise today to record 1324

1/2 Just completed the fourth and final count for this season Low Tide count of the Hayle estuary. Wader and duck numbers have dropped significantly and my first colour ringed Curlew was too distant to be identified.

It’s amazingly rewarding to do counts, you never know what you’ll see. If there’s a vacant site near you seriously consider taking it on, you won’t regret it, plus you’ll be helping science!

Not everything you see is a Knot! The species can often be confused with Dunlin, but we've got a video to help you get it right:

Knot ringed in Britain and Ireland have turned up again in several far-flung locations. We know this thanks to the Ringing Scheme, which allows us to identify individual birds:

The sound of a Curlew "instantly evokes the sound of wind, waves, and the smell of the sea," says research ecologist . How would you describe the sound of one of our most iconic birds?

How amazing are these adaptations in ducks? Ducks are one of the most easily observable groups of birds, but telling apart duck species, especially the females, can be quite tricky. We've got a great ID video to help you:

Volunteer expedition teams from the RAF Ornithological Society travel to survey waterbirds in north Scotland for us each winter. Some beautiful pics from earlier in the week, but perservering in conditions like these is what makes them real monitoring heroes!
