In my opinion, there are no "must play/have" games. Not one. I'd prefer those terms be dropped from opinion pieces. There are games I'd recommend others experience if they get the chance/opportunity (have I told you about Cuba Libre?!), but more than that seems... fanatical?https://twitter.com/anthony_howgego/status/1399725732272672783 …

Q: Is it unhealthy to describe games as 'must haves,' 'must play,' or 'essentials'? I'm thinking that language must be hard for people with acquisition disorders or who lack the funds/ social circles to play certain types of games.

...says the guy whose every other post is about Cuba Libre. Hey, nobody's perfect, and we get excited about things. I get it. I REALLY get it. But saying something is a "must", is proposing that one's tastes are absolutes. And they just aren't, no matter how deeply you feel them.pic.twitter.com/fSX5XZPHcI

Except some of us are unashamedly fanatical about some games - no denying the terms are possibly over used but sometimes - sometimes are appropriate…

I always try to present it as "this game is amazing and you have to play it, but I can provide that, so just come over and play it with me." My friends and I all have diverse collections for this reason. Board games are a group activity and we don't all need to own every game.

Absolutely agree. So many lists about "essential" games and "well rounded collections" when in reality everyone's tastes and finances are so vastly different.

Plus, those lists always have games I didn't enjoy and would have scared me away from the hobby if I had started there.

I've always taken the terms to be a bit deliberately hyperbolic. Their use doesn't particularly bother me, so long as the rest of their piece isn't aggressive about playing ______ and whoever is consuming said piece recognize they may fall outside of the suggested median.

This is something I wrestle with, because I understand (and use, and an entertained by) hyperbole, but the emphatic way in which some people will say "you MUST play this game" blurs my understanding of whether are intending to be hyperbolic or not.

From my perspective and my personal work as a librarian in a suburban-urban town where some pockets of folks live 42% in poverty, the only must haves are food, water, and shelter. I'll keep harping on this until I don't have to: Libraries Libraries Libraries
