Our work was published regarding loss of acidity in the yeast lysosome-like vacuole resulting in age-associated iron sulfur cluster defects. Lots of hard work by many amazing people.

A good day for iron, lysosomes, and lab coordination. Cool work from showing maintenance of iron homeostasis is critical function of lysosomes. Compliments our paper published today and work from and .

Work from the lab with some similar initial findings published the same day! (though our stories diverge in very interesting ways)

We then looked for similar effects with age using microfluidics and found defects in iron-sulfur cluster proteins. At the single cell level there was divergent response to this crisis with some cells having a compensatory iron transcriptional response while other cells didn’t.

We used yeast mutants missing the conserved vacuolar ATPase H+ pump (V-ATPase) that acidifies the vacuole to model loss of lysosomal/vacuolar acidity that occurs during aging. Using unbiased genetic screens, we found iron dyshomeostasis was important in V-ATPase mutants.

Five years ago, I reported 800 scientific papers with image duplications to journals. As of today, only one third of these have been corrected/retracted. Journals/institutions are very reluctant to take action. Maybe posting these duplications in public will help?

Amazing! “After the CRISPR therapy, Gray’s total hemoglobin reached normal levels; of which 47% was fetal hemoglobin. It’s thought that a fetal hemoglobin level of 25%-30% is sufficient to “cure” a patient with sickle cell disease.“ New era of single, transformative therapies
