I agree with : this is indeed a slippery slope. Russia controls <10% of Ukraine's population in the occupied parts of Donetsk & Luhansk oblasts; why give Russia a veto over what the rest of the Ukrainian population chooses to do?

this graph can tell you a lot. Russian-speaking citizen in Ukraine can easily a) support Ukraine as a pokitical nation and defend it against aggression, b) agree that though Russian is his/her everyday language, Ukrainian is the language of his/her country and shd be strengthened

Important thread reminding Western politicians that Ukrainians have their own views on what they would & wouldn’t accept. I hope Macron is paying attention!

3⃣ problems standing in the way of digitization in Ukraine: ▪ the lack of specialists in the field; ▪ bureaucratized communication between the central and local government; ▪ absence of communicated success stories

is not a region, it is a country. Ukraine is not a small nation, it is the second largest country in Europe. Language matters. So do facts. Never more so than now.

There was a time, not long ago, when imperial powers like UK, France, Portugal etc claimed their colonies as their "sphere of influence." Thank God we didn't listen o them back then. So why now is it ok to let Russia exercise a sphere of influence over its former colony, Ukraine?

We can argue about history all we want but it is Russia that is endangering the already fragile “peace” in Ukraine. It were Putin’s commands in 2014 and 2015 that brought us here. Not the collapse of the Soviet Union or Poro/Z government

The Russian Government's aggression against Ukraine 🇺🇦 is part of a decades-long campaign to destabilise European security. The UK 🇬🇧 will defend freedom & democracy wherever it is threatened, and that is why we and our allies .

Ukraine's trajectory in main categories of WPJ rule of law index, from Yanukovych era til now: Ukraine best on societal order & security + lib rights; worst on corruption (which improves) & crim justice (which worsens). Biggest improvements in exec constraint & govt openness.

4/4. This would confer openly on Russia’s long-running campaign to keep hold of Ukraine, the status it has probably really had since the start (in 2013?)—that is, of a political campaign then war of colonial re-subjugation, but, oddly of a modern, but "pre-industrial" kind.

Excellent piece that portrays Putin as a serious student of history, but as one who is trying to rewrite it in a 19th century power political, postcolonial and revisionist way 👇🏻

The security of Ukraine is closely linked to the security of our continent. And that is why the Russian military build-up at the border with Ukraine is a huge concern for the EU. Listen to MEP outlining Europe's position in Kyiv⤵️

Very much this 👇. It’s the truly reactionary Black Hundreds side of Putinism.

Former US ambassador to Russia told me that Putin sees Ukraine very much through an ethnic lens and that his behaviour is colonial in nature in this week’s episode of Black Diplomats Podcast. Full interview here:

In which a Russian TV host muses about sending “polite people” (little green men) to oust NATO from the Baltics and create Donbas-style “people’s republics” in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania…
