My therapist has told me this a few times. Apparently, it's caused by a "reduction in blood flow through the gut that in turn produces the oddly characteristic butterflies feeling in the pit of your stomach", and it happens during anxiety and fear too

See, I remember seeing someone tweet the link between butterflies and anxiety before and I never paid it any mind but when I say with myself and thought about it, I was like “wow, they’re totally right.” Thank you for sharing that.
