What’s the point of the security guard? Please tell me he’s required to do more than film and “try” to take the merch back ...

A security guard has zero police powers. Their job is to observe and report. They are private citizens. They are not agents of the state. Guards are not even supposed to chase down people. Again, observe and report. The guard is supposed to notify police and is supposed to log it

I might be wrong, but I think the words “security” and “guard” both implicitly signal more should be done than observing.

He is there to protect the people. A simple crime, it's view, report and make sure people are safe. If someone was threatened he could step in. Trust me, I worked as security, we used to be able to tackle thieves in the store.. then it became watch em.

That's contracted security. He definitely isn't allowed to do anything even if someone's in danger. Your talking in house. This guy at best can watch and call the police.

I suspect if someone was being attacked he would step in.. or I would hope so.. but then.. you never know.. the threat of a lawsuit, losing your job.. It's sad that would even be thought of.. I'd risk it.. but then.. I don't have a family to feed.

No, if someone is being attacked a security is supposed to observe and report. A security guard is a private citizen with zero police powers.

Even a citizen has certain powers, you aren't going to stand and watch someone get beat down if you can help. You may not be obligated, but just like private security can defend their person.
