They aren't going to "do better". The modern republican party is in an ideological purity death spiral and has been for the last 20 years. It's only accelerated enough finally for everyone to notice.

I don’t get why people aren’t talking about the dwindling number of people who identify as republican and the fact that everyone at his rallies will tell you that they have been to 5 of them.He has 90% approval with R’s right now, but that’s not the same number as it used to be

Trump's base is 40% at best. I would say closer to 30% but regardless no one can win a general election with those percentages.
