Dems, who vocally opposed the US engaging in peace talks with North Korea—an unstable, increasingly isolated nuclear power—are now criticizing Trump for not exacting more concessions from Kim Jong Un. Inane tribalism at its finest. Give credit where due. This was a first step.
The reaction from the Dems when Trump announced this meeting mirrored the GOP response when Obama announced his intention to meet with North Korea. In fact, Maddow even floated that there was a legitimate “reason” that such a meeting had never happened. It’s all tribal.
There are good reasons to be skeptical of Trump’s ability to handle peace negotiations—his dismantling of the Iran Deal comes to mind, and is something many have brought up. But peace is a process, and it takes time. We can’t rush to “it failed” after one summit.
Every step of the peace process with North Korea from every previous administration, has run up against backlash from the crowd that says “this didn’t work last time!” And yet every step forward matters—despite the steps back. They give us ground to work with in the future.
Suddenly, incrementalism is bad to the Dems.
Your bad faith is incredibly astonishing, altho it shouldn't be at this point. Literally every North Korea expert is heaping a heavy dose of skepticism, at best, at the spectacle that took place. But Walter Bragman knows better! All hail Trump, right Walter?
It's hard to take seriously your criticism of Dems for supposedly being reflexively against whatever Trump's for, when you are reflexively against whatever Democrats are for.
Dialog with a regime that we haven't had direct communication with in over 50 years. And since South Korea meet with Un a week or two ago wouldn't now seem like a good time to try to deescalate things? Isn't this better than taunting them? Im not a Trump supporter btw.
