Connect West Seattle via gondola

SkyLink could serve West Transit this decade rather than spending $3.5 billion on a train to nowhere for only 27,000 riders next decade - imagine how much we could improve bike and pedestrian access to our transit system with the savings

Support for public transportation has never been greater, but. support is not enough. In many parts of the world, public transit projects fail to gain significant ridership, or cost way too much. To solve these problems, we must go deeper.

Mexico City has a great subway system and is expanding their automated gondola system to connect some of the stations into the hilly and dense neighborhoods - very similar to what we're proposing for West Seattle.

West Seattle would be one of those places a gondola would make sense.

Gondolas are probably a favourite transport mode of transit enthusiasts and regular folk alike, and apart from ski resorts and hilly mountainsides, we're starting to see more of them in our cities. But does your city really need a gondola?

After Medellin and La Paz, Mexico City has started to build a gondola network, too. It will connect to each other and several metro stations. In West Seattle we could connect High Point, Alki, SS College, the Duwamish Longhouse with light rail stations in Sodo and CID.

About social equity: Light rail would only serve the least diverse WS neighborhoods, most POC will have to do multiple transfers. If ST would extend LR along Duwamish, gondolas could serve High Point, White Center, Westwood -- everybody instead of a few privileged.

Happy Bike Month everyone
Did you know that you will be able to bring your bicycles on board? Our cabins will be large enough for several bikes & the seats lift. This can help a multimodal shift, providing more all-season transportation options.

An urban gondola has been approved to bring commuters into Paris. The urban gondola feeds into a tram line (light rail). The gondola is preferred because it does not condemn residences and businesses in its path and it is inexpensive to install.

Aerial gondola systems are in the planning stages for LA, San Diego, Pittsburgh and Vancouver, BC. All of these systems have something in common with West Seattle—-steep hills.

How is it that it costs $3.2B to bring light rail to West Seattle but with an aerial gondola system the cost is $2B+ less. To a significant extent this is because getting to the Junction in West Seattle involves traversing very steep hills. @seattlekim

What's Seattle doing to electrify transit? Wait until light rail reaches West Seattle by 2032 and generate more carbon for a ton of concrete and steel for its construction???
SkyLink could electrify West Seattle by 2026 with far smaller carbon footprint.

These huge bridge structures require tons of concrete and therefore will have a huge carbon footprint. How long will it take to offset the carbon used during construction?!? SkyLink would require far less destruction and construction, consume less energy, and be available sooner.

For the same cost, we could not only serve the same stations by gondola but extend light rail to South Park to serve Southwest Seattle, get us to the airport more often and faster and it would allow for an extension to Renton later.
