You can paint a rental. You just have to paint it back before moving.

It depends on where you live. Every apartment I've had came with a strict no painting rule- and inspections were conducted monthly. Some even dictate what types/colors of window treatments you can use.

You probably weren't having to live in subsidized housing, (hopefully!) but that rule was in place in every apartment I've had here in TN, even the ones that weren't income-based. I'm sure it's less aggressively enforced in higher-scale complexes though.

It could be a state by state thing, too. TN is a beautiful place to live so there is that.

My wife and I just purchased our first home. Having color on the walls was one of the greatest feelings. Also, just being able to fix/replace things without the need for approval was liberating.
