Guitar-maker Gibson, which has filed for bankruptcy, courted loyalty from luminaries such as B.B. King, Chuck Berry and Jimmy Pagehttps://on.wsj.com/2JGvczE

Most guitar players know that Gibson quality dropped off while prices went higher. The musicians you listed typically played old Gibsons from 1950-1960’s or reissues. PRS passed Gibson a long time ago when it comes to “Gibson sound”. Still love Flying V and firebirds tho!

the past-tense is a bit premature here… the guitar business will go on.

What the hell! One of the most beloved and trusted guitars in the world going bankrupt? How is this possible???

They bought dying ancillary businesses and then didn’t have the cash to rebuild them. The guitar business can survive under new leadership.

I’ve heard from a few people in the last couple of days that report that quality of Gibson’s guitars has declined. If that is so, then Gibson has bigger problems than bad debt. Trust will erode.

I've heard that about Gibsons from most periods, but I'm not up to speed on current quality. They have the legendary models, and with good quality going forward can regain any trust lost.

The price of a professional instrument is 1 to $2,000. Some spend more for a tuxedo guitar, but you never gig with it, or take it on the road. That leaves only a handful of people in the world who can afford to play gibson for every audience, and many don't want to play epephone.

Gibson is the CBGB’s of guitar makers. We’re supposed to feel bad they are in trouble because of their glorious past. Truth is, they let their respective brands die of neglect.

Lol I have a ‘92 Les Paul Standard that I love. It has taken me around the country. Now I teach guitar and have been appalled at the low level of quality of late model Gibsons. $250 Squier strats come infinitely better set up to play than $800 Gibson SG’s.

Thanks! I’m sure there are a lot of reasons for Gibson’s situation but I definitely feel they took their eye off the ball 10-12 years ago.
