Why working on the railroad can get you a $25,000 signing bonus: A tight labor market pushes rail operators to offer hiring incentiveshttps://on.wsj.com/2Jhcr5t

My friends still working on the railroad tell me the new cameras are being used to monitor them VERY closely. Running a train used to be fun for them, but now the companies look for any excuse to fire you and blame any issue on "operator error."

It used to be they needed more than one person to drive a train. They cut back people and spy on them. They're going to have to offer more than $25k for that.

Indeed. When my dad started as a mudhop on the KCS back in the 50s, a typical crew had an engineer, a fireman, two brakemen, and a conductor. Now, many trains have just an engineer and a conductor to run them down the tracks.

Actually read the article now. It's for the transportation branches, aka, conductors/engineers. If you're curious, look up Hunter Harrison and see how he made shareholders happy by gutting companies. He called it running lean. I could go on quite a tangent.

Railroad jobs are good jobs. However, it's one of the instances where I believe a work union is significantly beneficial. We also don't contribute to Social Security. We have a Railrail Retirement program that the federal government keeps trying to hijack.

As a tax guy, this part I know. If I were a railroad guy, I would fight every such attempt by tooth & nail.

I prepared taxes 20 years ago and remember a tax credit (?) called the Rail Road tax credit / or am I mixing that up with the elderly tax credit?

20 years and I was terminated for a bullshit reason (NOTHING got tore up and NO ONE got hurt). The night before my termination, a crew shoved a tank car over the end of the track and they’re still working. They will hire you and spend the next 30 years trying to fire you.

You are correct they will fire you if you break a safety rule.. what rr? Bc usually their firing means suspended for a time and then there is dismissal.. and did you not have fire insurance?

        2. 30 minutes. I had to set some B/O’s out and then was going to pick it up and leave. And I was in control of YL, so NO ONE else could come in to YL w/o my permission. All BS if you ask me.

Terminated. I’d rather not say what Railroad right now until the case is finalized. Let’s just say a small short line part of a conglomerate.

IT IS MY UNDERSTANDING THAT IT IS A 24/7 JOB, RIGHT? AND WHEN YOU NEED ADDICTION HELP FROM ALCOHOL YOU ARE TOLD THAT EVERYTHING YOU SAY TO COUNSELORS WILL BE KEPT FROM YOUR EMPLOYERS. WRONG! I USED TO WORK AT A COUNSELING COMPANY IN UTAH AND THEY TELL EVERYTHING TO BOSS.

You don’t hire in this industry unless more goods are making it to the shelves. This is GREAT NEWS! @realDonaldTrump
