Barbara Bush is being celebrated so warmly in part because she reminds us of how normal American political figures used to act before this garish age, writes @peggynoonannyc for @wsjopinionhttps://on.wsj.com/2Hfg13D

"What I'm hearing, which is sort of scary, is they all want to stay in Texas. Everyone is so overwhelmed by the hospitality," she said. "And so many of the people in the arena here, you know, were underprivileged anyway, so this - this is working very well for them." #BarbaraBush

The garish age? Before Newt? Before birtherism? Before a stolen Supreme Court seat? Before “tell it like it is” racism coded language? Before conservative propaganda? Before lying to go to war? Before Trump rallies? Before Charlottesville? Before Trump?

When the people in the White House were not so obvious in their disdain for you, which would be prior to the Clintocracy.

Glad you asked. What was the big freak out about when George H.W. Bush was president? Other than his use of the term "New World Order", there was nothing. Then we got the Clintons. It's been a downhill ride ever since.

Just cause they came after bush senior? Soooo you didn’t explain nothing. Newt is there to represent that era...don’t worry! he is a vile republicans even by republican standards.

Oh, I'm sorry. A tribute to Barbara Bush, you crash the party to say what a shit world it is. Newt made his rise to power due to the arrogance of the Clintonistas. Big Bill had a Dem majority congress. His mistakes led to the GOP taking over.

The article’s headline is crashing the party in case you didn’t read it. The good old days before this “garish age”. Newt rose to power not just attacking Clinton by the way...even his own party 👍🏼 but hey he is on Faux on a regular basis representing conservatives.

Don't forget his awesome books about alternative history. There are few political leaders that I respect and good ole Newt ain't even close. Barbara Bush and her husband represent the end of the old school.
