Batteries on average cost 8.2% more than a year ago. At a time when prices are stagnating on everything from toilet paper to diapers, such pricing power for a product that is increasingly obsolete has confounded shoppershttps://on.wsj.com/2H2bBZz

I don't get this article. What things have replaced batteries enough that they're becoming 'increasingly obsolete'? Game Boys? That's literally the only thing that comes to mind, everything else that needed batteries 20 years ago still needs them now, as far as I can tell.

For those that have small kids, they are not “incredibly obsolete”. Every kids toy today takes on average 4-6 AA or AAA batteries and, because they are kids they are never turned off!!! Do some research before making such claims.

Increasingly obsolete? I recently bought one of those Duracell compact LED flashlights rated at 500 lumens that requires 6 'AAA' batteries. What about all those millions of TV remote controls out there that require batteries?

I just bought this new 510 Lumen Duracell Flashlight a Month ago. A compact Flashlight that’s very bright and practical for it’s size. A 21st Century Flashlight that runs on batteries! And being LED, those batteries should last quite some time.pic.twitter.com/sZs3M4vZNf

Nothing unusual there. As the need for batteries go down, production is cut. manufacturer buys less material and the price of material goes up. So the price of batteries go up. A company making batteries for the first time goes through the above in reverse.

Demand for batteries is quite unelastic. What are you gonna do when your TV remote runs out and find out that price of batteries has risen by 10%? Throw the TV away? Therefore, producers can raise the price to compensate the revenue lost from decreased sales. Simple economics.
