Facebook users gave their data away in exchange for using the site. Every single American's data is harvested by Experian, TransUnion and Equifax. They have no choice, and derive no benefit.

If their response is "Well, FB knew all the unethical shit we were doing" instead of "sorry, we screwed up, we'll come up with some ethical guidelines for our researchers so this doesn't happen again", they are doing it wrong.

Facebook is simply trying to cover its ass. They have known for years of academic institutions using personal info for research.

So Cambridge is finally talking, now that Brits have done the groundwork to lay the entire blame at Facebook's feet. Facebook is just a (data) bank, albeit a negligent one. Brits at Cambridge Analytica are the actual masked bank robbers.https://twitter.com/WSJ/status/985125545938751488 …
