Please, let's stop pretending that Trump even understands a fraction of what is happening. He is an incompetent, deeply stupid reality tv personality who managed to avoid complete financial ruin by laundering mob $. He's now setting trade policy. How is that working out so far?

Not so much "tough on China" as it is tough on Americans... You don't need to be an economist to know that we will lose.

Nuance is going to be China’s response when they target specific U.S. items to put tariffs on to affect our midterm elections

Right! Exactly. Why waste time on reading and the ‘nuance’ when you can be a bull in a China Shop and wreck it all on the BIG STROKES?

Has lighthiser been hiding in a cave? China has been hurting or trade? Seems to me that China has been providing Goods that America needs at a cheaper price and that's bad? Does leithauser have a degree in economics? Bruce Lee I wonder if he ever completed college.

China's market penetration had to reach saturation point in the US at some time . Unfortunately for China ,domestic growth plateaued a few years ago and it needs to piggy back on the American growth cycle . In light of that why raise tariffs and bring US inflation into China ?
