To be fair, Mario Andretti or any other Formula One driver wouldn't have been able to dodge that person the way they meandered in front of the car in the pitch black of night.

that's why the car crashed, because the non-driver was convicted 17 years ago.

Do we know anything about how the pedestrian entered the roadway? Since there was a reference to them being outside of the crosswalk, I'm just curious if there are other circumstances that shift some of the fault from the car and operator?

A lot of areas here butt up to desert, there’s no restrictions on where to cross. It’s also incredibly dark in many areas. There have been massive issues in north Phx with ppl getting killed trying to jaywalk by the train and it’s too dark to see

I don’t see what this has to do with core issues here. Sounds like the guy made a mistake, paid his debt. Perhaps if he had been convicted of vehicular manslaughter, that would matter. Otherwise this just feels like public shaming.

Look at that! Let's make a big deal about a mistake made almost 20 years ago. I'm sorry, but who cares?

There was absolutely no way that car could have stopped in time. Reaction time even with the video, your talking less then one second. Critics of Self driving cars try to hold the cars to an insane level to try to make a point.
