As college professors ban laptops, students resort to shorthand, borrowing notes from classmates—or dropping the class altogetherhttp://on.wsj.com/2FCwjPn

It's ridiculous that professors do this. It's all because their egos lead them to believe the student isn't paying attention. If a student decides to pay 10s of thousands of $ per semester they should be allowed to use a lap top. They all want typed papers for reports though

Might be the case for some but reality is 1. Many aren’t paying attention and 2. Studies increasingly show better retention with hand-written notes. Most profs just want their students to do well.

Isn't that apart of weed out process though? As adults, it's up to the student to pay attention

In the ideal world I agree but at pub. institutions more attention paid to a prof’s success rates. Plus, how many students there on loans or parent’s money? Part of job is to at least keep classroom environment conducive to success.

So a parent pays for them to go and it's up to the professor to parent them next? What happens in the real world when they get a job?

It’s not about parenting. What they do outside the classroom and how much effort they put into it is up to them. But there can be a certain level of expectations inside the classroom just as there is at any workplace.

Personally I wrote all my notes for class.. Most prof don't wait for everyone to finish writing and if they did it disrupts the class more then anything. Everyone is expected to be able to type nowadays. It's new school vs old school belief.

Just leaving that there since you didn't actually speak to any disabled students & seem to be making light of debilitating hand pain. #NothingAboutUsWithoutUs

This is dumb. I wouldnt mind writing, but most professors make that impossible. They show 40+ slides containing 150+ words over an hour period and expect you to know every piece of information on those slides. Its not possible to write that all down, but it is possible to type it

They should just firewall the classroom WIFI to limit the content to their Intranet (vs Internet)

I recorded all my lectures and ran them through dictation software. Easier and zero typing.

You can in fact use a tape recorder in class. I go back and reference the audio. But to drop a class because you can’t type out your notes shows how weak the human product has become. This is exactly why people can’t spell for shit, because they rely too heavily on the automated
