Really annoying the article doesn’t mention once the root cause for this: abuse of antibiotics in US farminghttps://www.theguardian.com/environment/2018/feb/08/huge-levels-of-antibiotic-use-in-us-farming-revealed …

True, but all antibiotics suffer from eventual resistance and there has been a tremendous deficiency in new antibiotic development. It's very hard for biotech to make money on it and that has stunted development badly. We need US Govt to offer major subsidies for development.
-
The costs to develop are incredibly high. Then doctors will only use "new" antibiotics as "last resort" which crush sales all while the patent clock is ticking. Lastly a good therapy cures the patient quickly meaning low time on drug. It's a broken business model.
-
I'd like a 7 year Govt. payment model for approved antibiotics. Once approved the Govt would pay X amount per year to the developer. This off-sets sales as the drug needs to be used sparingly but only rewards the shareholders who took the development risk and succeeded.
