Facebook legitimately does not understand what it is, what it wants to be, the level of its importance to our lives, or the general social temperature toward it. Just utterly clueless and devoid of self-awareness.

There really needs to be a massive look into new media platforms and how election laws apply to them. Facebook obviously violated tons of election laws, though I suspect mainly due to rampant ignorance. It is time for these platforms to act like grown ups and take responsibility.

So you dont trust your electorate to make up their own minds? FFS you have CNN and Clinton beat by ,allegedly, a Russian campaign which cost less than a million dollars? Wake up for gods sake

I am not saying anything about the 2016 election here, nor am talking about a partisan issue. I’m just saying that the current laws haven’t been updated for current reality of how info is distributed. Either side can easily exploit the current holes. This is about FB, not Trump.

I have worked in the tech industry my whole life, including tech giants - and I can tell you that they tend not to be very aware of how they effect anything outside the tech bubble - but it is becoming a real issue now.

For example, FB illegally charged different campaigns different amounts for campaign advertisements, because their model lowers the price of ads that get clicked more. They didn’t know better, but that’s not okay - and it doesn’t matter which candidates they are.

FB charged Clinton less for her ads than they charged Bernie when hers were getting clicked more. That’s a clear violation of campaign laws, but no no one knows quite how to apply them. It just needs to be looked at and fixed. Not a partisan issue from where I stand.

Most of this mishandling had to with Facebook refusing to acknowledge that is was fundamentally a media company and not really a social-network. There is also a really insightful @WIRED piece about this.https://www.wired.com/story/inside-facebook-mark-zuckerberg-2-years-of-hell/ …

Political adds are suppose to be identified so ordinary people can tell the difference between paid content and. someone's personal opinion. Just ID the paid ?

tbh it’s honestly equal parts inspiring and depressing to know that @maggieNYT is doing her job at 12:39 AM on a Sunday while I shout at the TV because I think I’d be better at a job I’m not trying hard enough to get.
