They are very data-driven and mechanical with their operations. Wouldn’t be surprised if they took a hardline approach like this instead of a more elegant strategy (like considering more people who didn’t go to “legacy”-type colleges).

(1)This appears to be a Catch 22 situation: lack of diversity increases disparity - social & economic - creating an unequal society/class divides & consequent social strife thereof which needless to say is unwelcome- while a diversity drive invites accusations of discrimination.

(2)Indian constitution provides for 15% reservation for Scheduled castes & 7.5% for Scheduled Tribes (Indigenous people) in govt. jobs which did improve the lot of the downtrodden; however, the recipients believe that it is not enough while others believe it sacrifices efficiency

There are plenty of ways to improve diversity that don't include discriminating against the dominant group or accepting lesser qualified minorities (mentoring, outreach programs, using diversity in equally qualified candidates, blind recruiting, etc.).

They don't give an immediate bump in diversity stats like what youtube (allegedly) is doing, but that's what happens when you mix misguided social justice with cynical corporate culture.
