Even as schools build steel-fortified safe rooms and hand out bulletproof white boards, experts says lockdowns are best defense against a shooterhttp://on.wsj.com/2HKH2IG

How about banning assault weapons? You know...like they do in other countries where kids are never mowed down by gunfire at school. #BanAssaultRifles #marchforourlives #neveragain

The fact that kids in school need anything bulletproof is the biggest failure of America highlighted and in bold print.

Wish I had a dollar for every media story like this that nitpicks individual tools and tactics that each have their own flaws but together can form an effective strategy. Just short-sighted.

Or let's try low cost, easy to implement things. 1) Lock all the doors except the main entrance during school hours 2) mantrap lobby; a single checkpoint, has to sign in. 3) Security staff at the major approaches to the building 30 minutes before EOD, cameras on the other routes

That's maybe $10k to retrofit the lobbies and get a good camera network -- assuming Google doesn't extend their Chromebook program to just give away enterprise grade @nest setups.

These are the basics of security which are in place at every other place of large public gathering. Concerts, office buildings, hospitals. Etc etc. Not bulletproof binders.

"but what about exiting during an emergency?" Disney world has no problem with a single point of entry and exit. Tens of thousands of people in and out every day.

In light of yet more inaction it seems the best defense against a school shooter is still actually emigrating to a country with gun controls.

What experts? The "NRA Experts"? NO! This last guy pulled the damn fire alarm and everyone ran out into the halls and the doors shut and locked on them! GUN CONTROL is the answer. NOT turning schools into high security prisons.

Soon they'll be asking parents to buy bullet proof backpacks along with the insane amount of school supplies like pencils, books etc.

steel fortified safe rooms as last redoubt, highly trained personnel, not second grade teachers etc. unless trained to professional level (highly doubtful), but first line of hardening must be outer perimeter around school. If a gunman gets into the school you’ve already failed.

And in front of any would be gunman needs to be an effective vetting background check (including transfer/sale to a friend or relative) to prevent him (yes virtually always a him) from getting any firearm (including ammo, or magazines).

I can't even imagine what parents and schoolchildren are going through to be justifiably this scared. Horrible, not great times, in our country.

In blue states have a metal detector at every entrance to a school building. For red states let #NRA do the planning, has a new funeral insurance included in membership (but you aren’t covered if you or your parents voted for DNC). @kerathink

The best defense is to have local auths come into each school. Each building needs to be assessed. Staff needs to be drilled on how to react. Parents, b4 buying backpack shields, see if kids keep packs w/them or if kept in locker
