On average, 82% of U.S. farm household income is expected to come from off-farm work this year, making even 12- to 16-hour days on the farm a part-time jobhttp://on.wsj.com/2BRqDC3

I think it speaks to the importance of trying to keep a diversified farm operation which can be also be difficult, it’s like the stock market, if you invest in 2 stocks and they both hit a down trend things don’t look so good. Off farm jobs can be a way of diversifying

And everyone wants a 99 cent value menu. Farming is the only business which has to buy retail but forced to sell wholesale.

What about all the farm subsidies? Where do they go?

Next decade, the new tech will benefit bigger farmers even more. Small farmers need to work more to keep the income level. The era of small farmers will end if the government don not create programs to intervene the market

First, the crop plantation does not require full year’s attention. So the less off farm time is because the income from crop alone is enough. Now, with the price of corn dropped, extra income is needed.

Second, the yield of corn is increasing thanks to the tech. In the last decades, all most 40 bushels are added into the yield, thus, if demand can not catch up, the price drop is ensured. This is a irony, the success of US at, partly caused the problems.

Third, the new wave of tech, based on satellite and big data, proportionately favor bigger farmers, they can balance the income with higher yield and lower prices. Smaller farmers can not. Who to blame? The technology

Without these new techs, the price of corn will be higher, bigger farmers do not benefit more. Farmers can enjoy the high prices with steady lower yield. The more success the ag tech become, more farmers need extra income

Farmers cut down the trees for pastures and pour chemicals onto the land that runs off into the creeks and rivers polluting the water and streams.

Farming is a hobby. The corparates having screwed returns down that low that all food production is unviable. Even the corparates struggle to break even when they get into it.
