When Mao banned religion, Luojiang Catholics gathered and prayed in secret. Now they face the specter of more control from Beijing.http://on.wsj.com/2Cr7ByE

The Luojiang Catholics should wait until the cordial relationship between the Vatican and China's Government are completely established. They should know that the Vatican will not compromise the Catholic Church and her Beliefs for the sake of a contemporary Political Ideology.

I mean, @Pontifex is letting an avowedly atheist government pick bishops, so...maybe we should be taking this as a lesson that papal infallibility doesn’t mean that popes can’t do epically bad things.

I doubt you will find a Catholic Bishop who is not true to his Faith, Vows and the Catholic Church, be it in China or anywhere else in the World. The Dominicans are very staunch Catholics and this may be the worry of the Luojiang Catholics – the Order of the Bishop nominated?

I consider a few Dominicans friends and have a lot of respect for their order... but a nominee being OP does not make an accommodation where a government (much less a doctrinally atheist one with a long record of human rights abuses) makes episcopal selections a good one.

Do you think the CCP will allow bishops who promote Rerum nova rum and Centissisimus annus? Who denounce the evils of forced abortions and the now-two child policy? Who recognize African children as children of God? Who teach that the Gospel is more important than geopolitics?

The Racist, Cynic and Atheist is you. Your own guilty conscience is threatening you and distorting your comprehension of the article. I suggest reread.

I can’t tell if you’re a Chinese Communist Party apologist or a regular overwrought tweeter. Either way, the CCP is bad. It forces abortions on Chinese women. It brutally beats African 10y olds. It holds as Doctrine that there’s no god. It deserves no role in selecting bishops.

Now you are making better sense: 'It deserves no role in selecting bishops.' I fully agree but it is the first step to the CCP recognition and acceptance of Religion and the Gospels with its corrective message and its place and purpose in peoples lives.
