If volcanoes can cool the planet, why can't we? Big eruptions have lowered temperatures by reflecting the sun's rays; scientists want to replicate the effect with aerosolshttp://on.wsj.com/2F9fDzc

James, aerosols are small suspended particles, like dust, or water droplets. Not to be confused with aerosols from spray cans that contain CFCs (the ones that destroy ozone).

Check out the history of fires in Yellowstone and tell us what happens if we're wrong?

Gary, I agree with you. If a volcano like Yellowstone erupts, the aerosols will cover the planet, creating a catastrophic series of events. We do not have the tech to clean the upper atmosphere from such aerosols that take a very long time to settle.

My tweet was too obtuse. First you are correct. What I was talking about was a fire that almost destroyed the forest in the Yellowstone. Policy then was to put out fires and let tinder and underbrush build up until they couldn't stop the blaze.

Polar ice melts, disrupts normal sea currents, sea level rise, more weather disasters like hurricanes.

Yet we have had the fewest major hurricanes hit us on record over the last ten years.

Atmospheric science is complicated, hard math, been there done that, chaos theory and differential equations. Many factors to consider, including El Niño, which also affects hurricane activity. I challenge you to learn a little about the topic, very interesting.

We can; but it is a ‘sticking plaster’ solution to a bigger cultural problem; our collective disregard for the environment.

So you don't want an easy fix to global warming, you prefer one that micromanages everyone's lives, destroys economies and capitalism. Got it.

It’s not an easy fix. Once started you would have to keep on going until the problem was resolved; read decades. It also ‘fixes’ only one element of one problem, there is everything else that we are doing to the environment; plastics, pollution, snogs, etc.
