As schools compete for declining students, some bring the news directly, with balloons and marching bandshttp://on.wsj.com/2EjTHoa

Because that money couldn’t be used for other things like allowing low-income students to attend..

This is about admissions (and branding), not financial aid. Everybody has access to aid, and at many private schools the vast majority get some.

I know there are two different budgets but I still think this is a waste of money. People don’t want or need balloons. They need to know they’re able to get in and afford quality education.

Well in Butler’s case (which I am most familiar) @MSKaltenmark usually tacks on some #ButlerBound visits with @ButlerBlue3 while traveling with the basketball team. So the per-trip cost of each visit is quite low. The regents have been incredibly pleased with Butler’s marketing.

You are also thinking of this as overhead that’s tacked onto tuition. It’s not. Private school and out-of-state tuition has gone up so, so much in my lifetime it’s absolutely insane. Schools need to fill their freshmen classes and marketing is a relatively low-cost way to do it.

among the most stupid and wasteful thing I've heard. Those colleges get taxpayer provided $ aid. This is how it's spent?

Butler is private. Funds to accomplish these visits are not taxpayer funds. FYI: Branding is critical to smaller private schools. #Butler is world-class at branding.
