Sadly the merit system would exclude those like my great-grandfather Alex Taub. He came to America with the dream of becoming an engineer. He had an 8th grade education & some tech school. Yet he rose to became the top auto engineer at @GM and designed the Chevy 6 cylinder enginepic.twitter.com/Ywpn8gWeTs

Who decides what merit means? And if we really want more economic growth, we'd invest in healthcare, education & infrastructure - not call that welfare so we can permanently cut the revenue of the gov't.

Merit doesn't necessarily mean having a PhD, could range from being a skilled reaper of a farm crop, to someone w/ HS education w/ some apprenticeship type background. However it ought be something that provides a needed benefit to host country & makes them eminently employable.

It is ironic that many of those now calling for limiting our immigration to merit-based are descendants of those arriving on our shores with skills such as farmer, laborer, homemaker, etc. Hypocrisy is alive and thriving in the GOP.

Merit based immigration? Write off the first generation. Second generation is Americanized with full use of language. Give them full access to a higher education. Now we are talking about lawyers, doctors and teachers. Don't be so impatient.

Why do some view those who meet merit criteria as less deserving than random people who cross our borders illegally? I know if we used Canadian approach people would be more open to some real refugees as well.

It's bad enough we lose pillars of the community and brilliant citizens to draconian immigration. Does #maga just mean #archaic?
