Take a small plate. Fill it with warm water, put container upstairs down for 1 minute while running hot water on plate. Remove. Open. Voila.

I had the same experience the other day. It was my first purchase of the product. Couldn't figure out if it was a screwed on lid ( it was) or a pop off lid. Took me 5 minutes to get lid off. I was shocked because I'm not exactly a weakling.
