I think we’re in the golden age of comedy. So many comedians are out there killing it right now. But I guess it isn’t funny to people who feel guilty for enabling. My conscience is clean, and I’m laughing my ass off.

I think about that when I’m laughing at Colbert or SNL.

Trump ruined comedy and the country in a little more than one year. Now that's commitment.

Being politically correct killed comedy

"If you don’t share Mr. Maher’s politics, you are likely to find him an odious, even loathsome character," I can tell you that disagreeing with Mr. Maher's politics is not a prerequisite for coming to this conclusion. Being political is not his problem.

Whether comedy is funny or not is a matter of humor appreciation which may vary from person to person. But Irony, Sarcasm and Mocking the Powerful have been around since the times of Jesters, Buffoons and Minsters. Why do these comedians have so many followers then?

I miss Leno. Nowadays these guys are a joke and can’t talk about anything else. They are literally obsessed with the so called man they hate.

Joseph Epstein, have you ever listened to laugh-a-minute Rush Limbaugh? He’s been setting this tone for 20+ years.

Hey! Comedians now a days don't even have to sweat writing jokes, because Mr. Trump is the joke. Each day is a new monologue.

I think the problem is PC culture and comedians playing it safe I understand that comedy is subjective but when you make edgy jokes or edgy memes your a racist or xenophobe And might be one of the reasons late night and snl is slowly losing ratings again comedy is subjective

Before the studio toned Duck Soup (then called Cracked Ice) down, Rufus T. Firefly was an arms dealer for the Eureka Ammunition Company starting a war between Freedonia and Sylvania to raise sales. The finished product was still very political and anti-war. (1/?)
-
(Interesting side note: The notion of arms manufacturers creating conflicts was prevalent in the 1930s, early notions of a military-industrial complex. One of Superman's early Action Comics foes was an arms dealer he forcibly made enlist in a war his company started.) (2/?)
-
As for Chaplin not being political, he announced Modern Times as "a satire on certain phases of our industrial life" and The Great Dictator was nothing but political satire. (3/?)
-
My point is that your premise is factually incorrect. You're seeing sanitized products neutered by Hollywood commercial interests and the legal requirement of the Hayes Code and assuming that was the original intent of the artists. We know it wasn't. (4/?)
-
In sum, I'm not a student of comedy or of film history. The source documents that prove my point are available with a quick google search. It is sad that a publication of the WSJ's reputation allowed this to be printed without the simplest of fact checking. (5/5)
-
(Correction: Hays code, not Hayes.)

The last time I watched late night TV was in the days of Johnny Carson who had far more class than these modern day pigs.
