I only rent houses for so many reasons: 1. One call to landlord sorts out all repairs/upkeep for free. 2. I'm next to obnoxious neighbors? It's for a yr, not for 'life'. 3. I want to move out of state, I don't have to worry about selling home, etc etc

I was a homeowner for 22 years and sold my last one a year ago, after plowing $$$ into it to update it. Am renting now and may never buy a house again. This part of the "American Dream" is not universally beneficial.
-
It truly isn't. I have had people tell me I'm throwing my $$ away. What about interest on a 30 yr mortg and prop taxes and home repairs and general upkeep/updates and on and on. The main reason for me? It's a very expensive anchor.
-
Same. I moved to a rental that costs the same as my mortgage payment. BUT I don't have to pay for upkeep and maintenance. And, the current place turns out not to be ideal, so I can move when my lease is up. Feels GREAT.

We lived in a place for a little more than a year that was fully maintained—they changed the air filters monthly & even changed your lightbulbs as needed. Plus, a gym, pool & underground parking. It was fabulous! I’d do it again if I didn’t have kids & dogs who need a yard.
-
That is what I aspire to!
-
Moving has to be the literal worst, unless you’re spartan about it?
-
No doubt. Last year, we moved one state to another and hired movers to pack and haul everything. Thought we had it made, but they packed boxes crazily (lightbulbs falling out of bedding, stuff from more than one room mixed). Never again! Next move I will pack my own crap!

Happened to us too, only our renters stole new air conditioners. We were stuck.

Mine melted down microwave, burned the kitchen counter, stopped paying for propane and used space heaters, locked dogs in study to destroy carpet, bedroom doors broken off hinges - all told, $30k in damage in a house that lost $300k in value. Renters are so nice... not
-
One of my renters has been in one of my homes for 9 years! I have had really good luck with renters so far.
-
You are lucky. Do everything you can to keep them! I would easily give up $500 more in rent per month for someone with a conscience and soul.
-
I give them a 10% discount on rent because of this and because they have the rent direct deposited from their employer. They are good people.
-
Turns out that when you treat tenants right, they treat you right. Maintain the place, and they'll help keep it maintained. Delay a repair, and they wonder why they're bothering to work to keep the place up.
-
I paid his utility bill of $1700 because he didn't. Dead of winter and he was out of fuel. I guess I didn't treat him right... No, the article, if you read it, talks about people like me who paid their bills, despite assholes like this.

Why are you promoting this article to my timeline if I can't read it? Waste of money.

I can't read the article thanks to your paywall, yet you continue to force this ad upon me several times daily. This is how you end up blocked.

My question is - where the hell in the Country can you buy and actual home for 137,000? Where there is simultaneously a job market to support it? Asking for a friend in California, and New York and Massachusetts

-
Haha Moved from NY to NJ.. Then, when I really grew up and wanted a house, I said no way in hell I'm gonna be a sucker paying almost $10,000/yr in taxes and 1.5 yrs ago moved South.... Now, acre of land, house, pool, stars and trees and only $800/yr taxes LOL..
