We're falling behind because of religion. Great.

The USA needs a immenient death exception for certain trials. This harm to patients standard is ludicrous for people with 6 months to live. In any case the slow trial process clearly results in more deaths no matter when it finally works. The sooner you start.....

On the upside, at least they are innovating here. Nobody can complain that they are merely copying the west

When china has soldiers that don't need to breath oxygen for an hour, see in the dark, and can fly, do you want to rely on prayer to save you?
-
Think of all the 'mistakes' and 'failures' in between now and those 'successes'. Think of the unbearable pain and terror those children will endure, not to mention experiments they'll be subjected to. No - this is not ok.
-
Think of all the car accidents that kill people every day. Does that deter you from getting in an automobile? Advancement is a scary thing but there is nothing that says it can't be done ethically.
-
The in between car models don't suffer torture or indignities. (And must be proven safe (enough for the bean counters, anyhow) before they are allowed on the road. BIG difference.
-
Nothing says we can't do that with crispr. Outright banning it will lead to a black market that cannot be regulated or monitored.
-
I didn't say to ban outright; my concern was "China, unhampered by rules". THAT is scary. To push and push and push ahead with little or no regulations or oversight - just to win the race. Ethics and compassion HAVE to be remembered.
-
My apologies. I don't think there is much we can do about china but I don't think we can afford to dismiss it entirely ourselves.

When you say "unhampered by rules", let's be clear. You're talking about rules forbidding labor abuses and human rights violations, enforcing environmental protections, and requiring fair business practices. You're better than this, WSJ. Your inner Murdoch is shining through.

That’s awful. But if I’m dying anyway, why not try something new? At least it’s some kind of last experience and I’ll be doing something meaningful.
