If social media distracts them from homework, 'the Wi-Fi goes off and the books come out'http://on.wsj.com/2DhsYb0

Wow! This is news? Back in the olden days we weren't allowed to play outside or watch TV unless our homework was done. It's called Rules.

Actually the science shows that creativity springs in households where rules are not overemphasized. http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/j.2162-6057.1989.tb00700.x/abstract …pic.twitter.com/P4U6HVMK2y

Since when are "tech executives" the model for parenting? Because they have stock positions in growing companies? How much time to they actually spend at home with their kids, on average?

My son has to have wifi. Everything is on Google docs. They also use phones in classrooms now. How will they self-regulate later on if we do it for them?

Thank you. My daughter is in a prestigious STEM school, she has a Calculus study group that meets every night via Skype. These parents may as well threaten to cut the electricity to the house. And if they're anything like tech execs I've met, they check their phones every minute.

Just block all sites other than Skype/Khan academy etc or sites like facebook/instagram/snapchat during homework. Some devices like Disney Circle make this easy, Circle software is also available now on Netgear routers.

If any parent were to establish such a regimen, I would give them a thousand dollars if they could prove it was still in effect 14 days later.

Kids have too much access to social media, unfettered use of computers, cell phones at ten- twelve -thirteen. If parents didn't have to work 14 jobs to make ends meet, then maybe some boundaries could be set for our children. #Letthehomelessvote #Resist

Rather than punitive approach guaranteed to make kids hate homework, these "experts" would do better to turn WiFi off when kids arrive home, then have them EARN it being turned on on when homework is done. Reinforces concept of working for what you want. #RealityCheck #parenting

Yep. Then additional blocks are needed. Not only an issue at home but a MAJOR classroom issue. How do you teach when kids are finding ways around your firewalls?
