Accurate location data is on smartphones, so why don’t more wireless carriers use it to locate emergency callers who dial 911?http://on.wsj.com/2D3tt5m

This is such a good point.. It would be revolutionary if dispatchers could trace calls like real life CSI. Many lives saved, crimes stopped

And if ever dispatching 911, be sure to provide ZIP codes, as many cities have a problem with more than one “1313 mockingbird lane”.

many jurisdictions like Tucson, AZ for example levy a special 911 calling location tax to ensure accuracy of emergency location #fail

true - but point was they (Tucson, AZ) taxes then doesn't implement - so not even necessarily a tax ... just a government rip-off was the point

Accurate positioning is done via GPS, notably you can call 911 even without any network which the global positioning system depends on.

I tried using Uber in Paris and several times the driver could not find us. Got charged cancellation fees. Uber needs to improve its map to be more user friendly.

Because people must give permission to use such data, which they generally don't. because it's an all or nothing deal. No provision for emergency calls only.
