Oklahoma’s quarterback won the Heisman Trophy, but only after walking on at two schools. Why does football struggle to identify the sport’s most important players?http://on.wsj.com/2DFSXVr

Because it’s that adversity the players face and relentlessness of never giving up that makes them great. As @TheNotoriousMMA states, “It’s obsession that’s the difference.”

It's a monopolized recruiting system with few rankings to which coaches can measure talent (think USNWR for academia). One would need to build an open tryout infrastructure so that players from all socioeconomic backgrounds could participate & be measured in a central hub.

A real QB does not try to be a superman alone . He will see the other play makers on his team and get the ball to them. No "I" in team.

Heisman winners have frequently underperformed in the NFL in recent years. So the most important players still aren't being identified.

College sports has succumbed to 'Group Think'! The west coast is plagued with terrible coaches wasting the talents of Fabulous players! Apparently these questionable coaches are being hired on endorsement of other coaches, not talent!

The best don't always come the places that are celebrated. Lots of gifted kids come from obscurity where they have been ignored.
