Rather than teaching them to communicate and problem solve, parents are teaching children to obeyhttp://on.wsj.com/2CiWCJd

Who says obedience and communication (or problem solving) are mutually-exclusive absolutes? Both traits are important for parents to teach their children.

Listening and discussion should be conscientious effort by parents to create true bonding and loyalty (instead of typical automated responses that so many parents respond with) and because, if the child feels understood they’ll listen more closely when the time is important.

Lol children need to be taught manners, respect, integrity, and the best way to navigate life. Please do that first.

Teaching children to obey everything instead of communicate and solve problems will make them factory workers obeying robots instead of being doctors, leaders, teachers, engineers, artists, sporters, designers, icters, politicians, etc. Just do what the robot tells you to.

This is SO dumb. Probably from an editor with no children. Who reads this pile of crap?

Good article. Another good discussion of this and other techniques is a book by John Medina: Brain Rules for Babies.

Not seen the book but heard a lot about it and the positive impact to young ones

Another good one is called "Nurture Shock"; it compares traditional parenting techniques with current, "modern" ones, success or not and why. Much information surprised me and changed how I view some of children's behaviors - of all ages.

Yes that perspective often occurs to me. Kids are the future and they shape it real good if nurtured properly

Well here is another one for you: "Five Minds for the Future" by Howard Gardner. About the kind of thinking skills (capacities for disciplined thinking skills, practicing ethics in life/work, creativity, respectful/synthesizing minds. This is a life long process.

I have a passion for my work (early intervention, language development, neurology, emotional development) and I love what I do. Can't learn enough about it.
