The history of the USA is based on industry& internal migration. Refusing to shift industries w/time, vilifying education/science/tech = rural areas choosing to stay behind. Let’s not forget many rural areas have become more regressive, more openly bigoted & less open to others.

Let’s face it, the narrative of coastal bubbles is the inverse of reality. Coastal & metropolitan areas are far more diverse w/representatives of most states in the US & far flung nations. The unrealistic bubbles are in “white rural regions” who regularly attack anyone different.

Business & industry are loathe to expand into regions that openly express bigoted ideals both w/their political rhetoric & legislative policies. If rural areas make it clear that POC’s, LGBT & educated “elites” are not welcome- why would anyone expect industries to invest there?

Perhaps if there was less vilification of anyone not born & bred there, or those w/ different backgrounds weren’t treated w/ derision, suspicion & open hostility, perhaps innovators & businesses would be more inclined to invest in these areas. Is their right wing shift to blame?

Big business and poor ag policy has killed family farming and forced anyone who wants to make a living into the metro.

Actually it started when the industrial revolution took off on this side of the pond back in the 1800’s, after getting started in England.

By that logic we could trace it back to the scientific revolution or the renaissance. It’s been a long time in the making. Not as simple as the WSJ makes it sound

Or to the water powered mills of the Middle Ages. Point is, as we developed more & more technology to serve us, jobs done by humans decrease. It’s about to get exponentially worse due to robotics. Politicians & change resisters are playing the blame game vs coming up w/solutions.

        1) Have you read Wendell Berry? There is a case to be made for other world views/land use ethics/models of life that do not subscribe to the notion of continued mechanization or technological advance. It would not necessarily make one a Luddite.

Instead it has to do with sustainability and a land ethic that respects the entire natural world. I appreciate the intelligent conversation. Even on twitter. Cheers

However, my original point is that humans perpetually invent more ways to have things done with less & less human effort/involvement. Been going on since we emerged as a species. I doubt it will stop. It will probably be our downfall.

Suppression of unions & competition from small businesses are causing wage stagnation & wealth concentration to the super rich. Most people are in significant debt. Doesn't matter the location, majority of people are suffering.

It does matter where you live, I've seen the difference between rural areas in my state compared to suburbs/urban areas. If they're educated, a lot of young people moving out of rural areas to city, where more jobs & opportunities are right now.

I was saying people are struggling all over despite location. I believe you are right that it's worse in rural areas. However, it doesn't erase the fact that people are struggling in suburban and urban areas.
