The accumulated national debt is forecast to reach 98% of GDP in 10 years. But politicians on both sides of the aisle are good at ignoring the issuehttp://on.wsj.com/2DcyI1d

Can't buy into the Rupert Murdoch WSJ false equivalency. It wasn't Democrats who just added $1.5 trillion to the debt via a massive heist aka #GOPTaxScamBill

Corporate taxes were raised in the 40s and 50s to pay for war and debt. Neither party is willing to consider this approach, leaving it to future politicians to cut services and tax individuals. We are taxed without representation.

The critical feature is wealth inequality. In the 1950s the top tax rate was 91%. There's a correlation between successive reductions in the top income tax rate and both the wealth gap and the political power gap that accompanies wealth inequalityhttp://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2015/nov/15/bernie-s/income-tax-rates-were-90-percent-under-eisenhower-/ …

It's inaccurate to state that taxes in the 1950s only served to pay for war and service the debt. Much of it went to a massive infrastructure project that gave us our interstate highways https://www.fhwa.dot.gov/infrastructure/50interstate.cfm …

A sane nation would simultaneously "raise" taxes on the super rich, use those tax revenues to meet the needs of the American people (e.g. #MedicareForAll) & belatedly heed Eisenhower's warning about the dangers of the military-industrial complexhttps://www.npr.org/2011/01/17/132942244/ikes-warning-of-military-expansion-50-years-later …

We are squandering our children's and grandchildren's future via irrational fear driven military spending and a never-ending Orwellian war on terror. Unless & until we do that, the U.S. will never achieve fiscal sanity.

The Republican Party was usurped by the extremists in the Tea Party... which is full of racists, KKK loving folks, Nazis (modern term alt-right), bigots, child molesters, sexual assaulters, and human rights abusers who do not care abt the deficit & corporate welfare supporters.

Repub Congress have been in control since 2010. Bush started 2 wars while he was in office. When Clinton left office the budget was balanced.

Funny how the WSJ forgets that Dems historically tackle the issue while the GOP under Bush, Reagan and Trump explode the debt in the service of oligarchs, greed, war and cynicism.

He reduced the deficit and slowed the growth of the debt. Deficit and debt are not the same. He also inherited a tanked economy from Ws wars and prevented the recession from becoming a depression. Clinton also balanced the budget. From Reagan on, Rs have increased deficit
