Since 2001, volunteers from small towns—many of them out-of-the-way counties struggling with lagging economies, drug addiction and limited options—have shouldered the greatest burden for America’s defense.http://on.wsj.com/2zhXs62

My daughter went to college and graduated summa cum lauded and couldn’t find a job. She enlisted in the army and still has the thousands and thousands of dollars to pay for her college education that was supposed to keep her out of the military. Fuk that

These are not “volunteers,” these are people who have taken a paying job with the military. Some need the job, some are looking for a way out of these areas.

They might have meant these are 'volunteers' because they weren't drafted.

I do remember when the term came into use, but it’s still not accurate.

Think of it this way: they volunteered to serve instead of being called to serve in a national draft.

Most of them just needed a job, and that was all they were qualified for. Nothing wrong with that, but it’s not volunteering; it’s a lack of better options.

That's very true in rural communities where jobs are few. But I spoke to a recruiter a couple of years ago, he said some don't even meet the basic requirements. Seems like getting a good education would help their situation, so would relocation to where more job opps available.

Overwhelming the middle class and poor have defended and died for this nation, while the wealthy get deferments. Everyone should have to serve.

HELL NO! As a former military memeber, I do not want people that were forced to serve next to me. I want people that are serious and chose the military. Have you served? Your children?

Quit feeling sorry for service members as if they were drafted or had no options. Whether 4 years or 20, service is a voluntary choice many make for as many varied reasons and periodically reaffirm for reasons that also change over the course of a career.

A real draft with no deferments would end this conversation. If Senators kids had to fight besides kids from the inner city or the backwoods our country would be better. If everyone had equal sweat in the game we would choose our wars more wisely.
