It's called PTSD and it's multi-generational. The result of decades of brutal Japanese rule starting in 1910. Next was U.S. occupation of South Korea as Japanese pulled out, the division of the country, a "Forgotten War" killing 20% of it's population and threat of annihilation!

That's because prior to the Japanese invasion the capital city of all of Korea was in the North and their royal family lived there. It was the center for trade and development with a thriving economy which is why the Japanese invaded and U.S. wants it now. There's gold there.
