Sweet! We need more eruptions! Helps cool the earth. Haven’t had enough major eruptions over the last decade...

It’s late and I’m tired so I’m assuming your comment is sarcasm.

I read (Scientific America I believe) that due to the increased human produced CO2 that the greenhouse effect may be reaching a tipping point and eruptions may no longer have the cooling effect they have had in the past. Guess we’ll have to wait and see. Hope you’re right.

It would take a long term increase in global volcanism to meaningfully reduce global warming. The last time Agung blew in 1963 it caused 0.2 degrees of cooling for about a year. The 1991 Pinatubo eruption caused about 3 years of reduced temps

Precisely. Volcanic activity, so long as it doesn’t destroy communities, can be seen as a good thing. There hasn’t been much of it at all, for a long time. Perhaps there is a correlation between reduced volcanic activity and global warming. In addition to the obvious.

The “little ice age” of the 14th-16th centuries was caused by a combination of increased volcanism and a reduction in solar activity. The combined affect was a drop of 1 degree C for much of 300 years. Which was a principal cause of the Dark Ages
