What if we used different, clean sources of energy so we didn't have to transport oil?

I was thinking sun and wind mostly, maybe some tidal and other hydroelectric power

Do the math, you need a concentrated source of energy, nice to think that different sources would work but we need a better battery for that to happen, L ion is not good enough

but... why aren't we setting up local solar and wind farms so we don't need to transport so much oil so far?

Because it’s not scalable, not reliable, it’s intermittent and not cost competitive (absent subsidies).

not scalable? Germany disagrees. Also, not intermittent when the power's stored in batteries. Your knowledge isn't current.

Not sure about any place else, but that is precisely what is occurring in our neck of the woods. Sprouting up in virtually every local municipality. Wind & solar, but the needs exceed what those alone are capable of providing.

Question: why can't we work toward increased investment in renewable energy sources and train those currently working in the fossil fuel industry for those jobs? The economy wins, the environment wins... we all win. This would likely be a slow transition, but a necessary one.
