I'm not standing up for FedEx here, but there is no US built equivalent of
@ATRaircraft ATR72 in terms of size/payload/range/operating cost for them to choose. As with all aircraft,a large amount of it's high value components are actually American designed and built. -

For their type of operation, you would have large aircraft (Boeing or airbus) going between the big distribution hub, and smaller aircraft feeding from the hubs to the smaller regional centres. A huge amount of the money spent on these aircraft will go back to US
